SCIENTIFIC AND MEDICAL ILLUSTRATION SOCIETIES, guilds & associations
There are a number of organizations where you can meet, network and learn from your fellow artists. I love GNSI, which is listed below. The AMI and GAG are also very popular.
Report: Becoming a Scientific or Medical Illustrator. I've gotten some great feedback on the report: “Thank you very much for the advice in your report, the best one I found about scientific illustration.”
Institute of Medical Illustrators -- Clinical Photography, Art, Graphics and Video in Healthcare
GNSI (Guild of Scientific Illustrators) -- I am a member.

The Graphic Artists Guild is a national union of illustrators, designers, Web creators, production artists, surface designers and other creatives who have come together to pursue common goals, share their experience, raise industry standards, and improve the ability of visual creators to achieve satisfying and rewarding careers.
