Getting your book illustrated: Writer's FAQ

"I have written a story/book and want to have it illustrated and published. Any advise you have for me would be greatly appreciated."

A number of publishers take over the artist-finding process, so check with your publisher before looking for an artist. After that, there are some great book illustrators out there. Check in our Directory of illustrators as a start.

GETTING PUBLISHED: Having some contacts is the best way to start. Also, the Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market, and the Writer's & Illustrator's Market, come out just came out annually (~$25 list price, usually ~$18 through this link).

You may want to peruse that book to see what the market is like. The publishers are cross-referenced in the back of the book by subject matter, so you can get a good idea of the number of publishers in your area (both geographically and subject mater wise), and their details. Another great thing to do is to go to a store that sells similar books to the one you're writing and see what publisher has published related works. Keep them on a list, or even write to them for advice.

There are also some ebooks that offer known writing markets in different areas - I have a list of those on my writing associations & markets page.
